Children’s Dental HealthWhen you have a kid, you need to do so much in order to keep them healthy – too much, it can see. Their teeth are no exception. Even though you know those adorable baby teeth are going to fall out, you still need to make sure your child has good dental hygiene and habits in place as quickly as possible. The better they take care of their teeth today, the better their teeth will look in braces down the road. The Rules to Follow for ChildrenChildren begin to get their first teeth as early as three to six months. As soon as they begin to get these teeth, you should massage their gums and those teeth with a warm wet washcloth. Once more teeth come in, you can begin to use age-appropriate toothpaste with a smaller toothbrush. This will help to show your child what to do with their teeth. Once they are old enough to understand they aren’t supposed to swallow their toothpaste, then you can begin to use fluoride toothpaste on their teeth to help prevent cavities. Get Your Child to the Dentist STATThere was once a time when it was recommended by the dental associations that children go to see the dentist for the first time when they were three, this is not the recommendation today. Today, parents are encouraged to take their children to the dentist as soon as they cut their first tooth. This helps to create a long history of dental care and can prevent the many cavities that are now popping up in the mouths of kindergarteners. Dentists who deal specifically with younger children are recommended as this will help to create a strong relationship with a dentist – in a non-scary way. Making Teeth Cleaning a HabitJust as you brush your teeth every morning and night, you need to teach your child to do the same thing. You need to encourage them to brush their teeth at these times and to begin to start these habits on their own. Once they begin to get older and the dentist recommends flossing, then you can begin to floss with your child then. At the same time, if you always brush your teeth together, you will show your child how to floss by example and they might want to begin as early as possible. If your child has troubles remembering to brush their teeth, it can be a good idea to buy teeth brushing equipment that makes them happy – i.e. cartoon characters, things that play music, etc. Over time, it will become less of a fight for your child to brush their teeth. Children’s dental health matters because it sets the tone for their dental health in life. The more you can help your child grow up with good teeth habits, the more they will continue these habits. Well, at least until they’re a teenager. Then you just need to hope for the best. |
